MAINTENANCE TIPS
Washing
A few precautions should be taken while washing Sisterlocks™. They are fragile, so being too rough with your locks may result in breakage, frizzing or excessive loosening. Before you wash, braid all of your locks into 3-5 different large braids to keep them secure. Shampoo the individual large braids with a squeezing motion to lather shampoo rather than a massaging motion that will cause frizz. Rinse your hair the same way. If possible it is best to limit washing your hair to only a couple of times a week. This will allow your hair to produce its natural oils, keeping your locks tighter for longer.
Sleeping
Wearing a hair cover will greatly increase the life span of your Sisterlocks™. Hair covers reduce friction between your hair and your pillow while you sleep, protecting your hair from extreme frizz. It's best to use satin hair socks sold specifically for Sisterlocks™ and dreadlocks. It resembles a large sock that easily fits over your hair, acting as protection.
Adhere to a nighttime ritual that enhances the appearance of your Sisterlocks™. How you care for your hair when sleeping is just as important as how you treat it during waking hours. Section your hair as you would in its natural state, and braid it to prevent tangling as you sleep. Tie hair up with a satin scarf or use a satin pillowcase to reduce breakage and frizz-causing friction.
Maintenance
Maintaining your Sisterlocks™ with regular tightening sessions, as your hair grows out, will allow your locks to remain looking great. Sisterlocks™ take hours to put in so scheduling tightening sessions consistently is the key to maintaining your locks so you don't have to get them redone altogether. Ask your stylist when she recommends you should visit her next. Employ the use of a hair stylist who is educated and experienced with Sisterlocks™. This “hairstyle” is a commitment that must not be undertaken lightly.
Styling
Avoid extensive heat to your Sisterlocks™. Curling irons or flat irons are very damaging and sometime cause a lock to break off completely. It's best to style your locks with no heat methods. Allowing your hair to dry within braids achieves beautiful curls.
It is not required but recommended that you visit your stylist for the first two shampoo sessions after having your hair locked. During these visits your stylist will inspect the progress of your locks. Some retightening may be necessary, as your hair is adapting to the new style. After these initial salon sessions, you should wash your Sisterlocks™ at least once a week using Sisterlocks™ Starter Shampoo to avoid product buildup.
Visit your stylist every four to six weeks. As a permanent hairstyle, Sisterlocks™ require constant tightening and maintenance that can only be done by a trained specialist.
